Technology can do better # 1

The following is a not so uncommon type of browser message:

Error 404: SRVE0190E: File not found: /compass

Surly, this is not called a 'user friendly' message'. I know what "Error 404" means. Many can figure out what a 'file not found' means, and some can guess what "/compass" means.

I have over 45 years experience in technology, so I accept these types of messages and move one. But, what do you think my 70 year-old sister, who has five days experience with an iPad, would think of this message?

Might as well display a message that says:

"Something is wrong!"

or maybe

"You have encountered an error made by a webmaster. Why not let make his/her day and email them?"

Come on folks! This is 2010 and technology can do better!
